Introduction

This research center was built on Feb 4, 2000 by both Chinese, Israel and American professors and doctors.

This center uses Chinese herb medicine and combination with conventional medicine to treat cancer patients. Many researchers, Ph.D and doctors work on it in both Israel and China to prove every herb that gives to patients is effective. There are more than 100 different types of cancer known. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are recognized forms of treatment but are of variable effectiveness, especially in the more advanced stages of the disease. Surgery, in particular, is the treatment of choice in the early stage of cancer, but many patients are beyond that option by the time their disease is recognized. At that time only radiation and chemotherapy are indicated but they are often associated with serious toxic side effects such as severe weakness, loss of hair, bone marrow depression, damage to liver, kidney and ovary, etc. In case of surgery the patient's immune system is depressed during the immediate post-operative period. This may have bad effects on the patient's defense against the cancer cells remaining in the body and lead to recurrence of cancer within months to a year or so after the surgery.

In the 2016 reported, 8.2 million people die each year from cancer, an estimated 13% of all deaths worldwide 70% the increase in new cases of cancer expected over the next 2 decades.

Thus there is a great need to find new way to treat cancer which are more effective on one hand in improving the chance to cure and ameliorate the side effects of conventional treatment on the other.

Chinese Medicine and Cancer Center

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a 3000 years history of use in China with the accumulation of a vast clinical experience. In particular herbs and other plants have been used successfully as anticancer treatment. The amount of research on Chinese anticancer drugs using modern methods of analysis done in Western countries up to now has been very small.

In Israel one of the first such programs was set up at Tel-Aviv University in the field of cancer research and at the Pulmonary Institute of Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel-Hashomer in the treatment of asthma. In both places the results supported the effectiveness of Chinese Medicine and emphasize the importance of continuing and expanding these research efforts. Dr Li is a member of the British Association for Cancer Research ( BACR) and the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR).

The basic approach of Chinese Medicine to the treatment of cancer patients is to make an accurate diagnosis and identify any possible causes of the cancer. Then the treatment is aimed at whole patient, and not just aimed at the local lesions alone. Previous research has shown that Chinese Medicine can inhibit cancer cells, change the cancer cells to normal and increase the effectiveness of the patient's immune system. In addition, Chinese Medicine increases the patient's good response to other therapies, diminishes the toxic effects of radiation and chemotherapy, increase the body's capability of fighting the cancer thus reducing the chance for recurrence and spread of the cancer and generally improves the patient's quality of life.

Project Objectives

The International Chinese Medicine Cancer Research Center has established the following program objectives.

  • Identify Chinese Herbs which have anticancer effect and directly kill the cancer cells.

  • Perform basic animal research studies including inhibit the cancer cells, change the cancer cells to normal and mechanism of enhancing the immune system, such as NK cells, T cells and CAMP/CGMP, change the cancer cells to normal, P53,WT etc. (5-8 years).

  • Carry out clinical research on cancer patients using Chinese Medicine for up to 10 years.

  • Initiate large-scale treatment trail in the medical centers of Israel.

  • Ultimately expand the center to involve the United States, Europe and China.

Funding and Administration

The Center is funded by grant and private donations. It is hoped to raise enough money to ensure continuing operation of the Center on stable basis for next several years.

The seven founding members ((Dr. HongFen Li (M.D), Professor Gerry Boam (M.D), Professor Shamargar Ben Eliyahu (Ph.D), Dr.Yossi Brenner (M.D), Dr.Yair Maimon (Ph.D), Dr. Dan De Medina (Ph.D), Lea Kedem(Counselor), Carol Sterling ) of the center include scientists and investigators in the fields of cell biology and oncology as well as pulmonary medicine.

A board of three persons administers the Center and all work is carried out according to the highest standards of modern research and as prescribed by the law. More than 20000 patients join the research from 40 countries of world .

Conclusion

The International Chinese Medicine Cancer Research Center gives promise to significantly improve the outlook for patient's suffering from malignant disease by integrating an ancient Chinese medical experience with modern scientific discipline and analysis. The achievement of the Center is the products of the combination of two highly fertile cultures: Chinese and Western.
